2nd Year Portrait Assignment Updates

Students are well under way here at NAIT now that they are back into school. They have had three portrait assignments already handed in and marked. We usually start the year off with a review of lighting fundamentals first presented in the second term of first year. Their first assignment was to create a portrait using a classical four light setup – main, fill, separation and background. Two portraits were required a ½, ¾ or full-length captures using two distinctively different lighting patterns.

Their second assignment took them outdoors to take advantage of time of year and fall foliage. The basis of this assignment was to capture two portraits of an individual in a scenic environment enjoying it and oblivious to camera. The second capture was with a closer view of the person, and may show the subject relating to either the surroundings or to the photographer/viewer. The two images were to be presented in a collage state with presentation being part of the mark.

Finally, their third assignment was "Advanced Portable Flash". We discussed guide number, light fall-off and fill-flash techniques. We are all faced with situations where we have to supplement ambient situations with flash - either as a fill source or to provide a "main" light to create shape and form. Two portable flashes were required with the decision left to the students as to what the two lights were going to do - main/fill, main/kicker. main/separation or main/background. Even though some of them feel they do not have a handle on the fundamentals of fill-flash the results proved otherwise.

Water Critique

The Students completed their third critique class this week (Oct 22, 2913) with the theme of Water.  The students were allowed to come up with their own way to present this theme in their images. We had many great images and here are the top three images for the week.

Self Portrait - Critique

Self Portrait is one of the more anticipated assignments of the year, as it gives you an opportunity to express yourself creatively.  This year, it was critiqued once again by the guys over at Laughing Dog Photography.  Dustin, Dwayne and Adam delivered a unique approach to the critique and gave some real life advice.  Here are some of the top scoring images.

Vintage Reproduction

The first year students were given an assignment to test their skills in lighting, composition, post-production and attention to detail. They were asked to chose a photograph shot before 1960, and see how close they could come to reproducing it using the skills they have acquired. Considering that none of these images have "copy and paste" off the originals, I think they came pretty darn close! Nice work guys!

Critique Class - Portrait Relationships

We are getting closer and closer to the end of the term now.  Last week's critique class was judged by Robert Bray of the Art of Photography.  As he has won Portrait Photographer of the Year 3 times for Canada in the PPOC, he chose a portrait category that focuses on relationships.  Below are some of the top images.

Critique - Painting with Light

This past weeks critique was selected and critiqued by Corey Hochachka of Troglodyte Photography.  The topic was painting with light which could be taken as a theme, or a technique.  The traditional methods of Light Painting involve extra long exposures, and the use of light sources as a paintbrush.  There have been more and more experiments with light painting lately, and therefore many new modern techniques have evolved.

The students have created some interesting images, and there are a few really great ones in this set.  Which of these images do you find yourself drawn to the most?
